When the Jesuits first came, there were estimated to be 30,000 Huron-Wendat. When they left the number had dropped to around 12,000. A large portion of the deaths was from diseases brought in by the French. When the Huron-Wendat found the pattern, and told the Jesuits, their reply was that they were dying because they had not converted to Christianity.
